How to Keep Ice Cream from Melting in the Middle of the Summer
June 7, 2022
There is nothing quite like a refreshing, delicious cone of Moose Tracks Ice Cream during the summer. Although, you may need a few tips and tricks if you’re planning to serve it at your next outdoor gathering to avoid it melting too quickly.
First, you’ll want to make sure you’re using a cooler that is insulated enough. Any cooler you buy at the store will have some insulation, but you can increase it by:
- Adding extra Styrofoam around the edges of your cooler
- Lining the inside or outside of your cooler with aluminum or bubble foil
- Adding a layer of foam between each layer of food stored in the cooler (yoga mat material is perfect for this)
- Putting a smaller cooler inside a larger cooler (inception)
After ensuring your cooler is insulated enough, you’ll want to store your ice cream in a shaded area. Ice cream can last up to twice as long in the shade as it would in the sun! Your best chance at keeping your frozen treats cool in the summer heat is by storing them under trees, patio covers, canopies, gazebos or something similar.
Within the cooler, make sure that you’re storing the items as close together as possible. Air pockets between items will cause the ice to melt more quickly so eliminate them as much as possible.
Finally, if you want to keep your ice cream icy for more than a few hours, use dry ice instead of regular ice. If you do use dry ice, remember to keep it in a well-ventilated area and use proper protection, such as gloves, while handling because contact with dry ice can cause freezer burns.
